In recent years there has been a desire to identify the human microbiome. Additionally investigators would like to characterize the "human core microbiome" and the impact of environmental factors on the microbiota. Due to the changed microbiota in patients suffering from variable disorders, the assumption arises that the bacteria in the gut play a decisive role in disease development. Several studies have already been conducted to assess the microbiota composition, as well as to evaluate the impact of probiotic administration. There seems to be an association between the microbiome and several disorders. Nevertheless further studies are needed to substantiate this theory.
