Collaboration with former Master Student leads to a Cell paper

From Vienna to Innsbruck to Chicago and Pittsburgh – and now a paper in one of the most prestigious journals in Life Sciences together with the working group in Vienna where everything started.

We are proud to share the recent publication of us with Marlies Meisel, PhD, Assistant Professor at the Department of Immunology at the University of Pittsburgh as lead author, whose scientific journey began at University of Vienna, in our working group, where she completed her Master’s degree in 2007.

Our latest paper, published in Cell, “Exercise-induced microbiota metabolite enhances CD8 T cell antitumor immunity promoting immunotherapy efficacy”, uncovers a novel link between exercise, the gut microbiota, and improved cancer immunotherapy outcomes. The comprehensive study demonstrates that exercise is able to stimulate microbial metabolism, increasing thereby the metabolite formate, which enhances the activity of cytotoxic CD8 T cells and strengthens antitumor immunity.

These findings highlight a novel mechanism how lifestyle factors such as physical activity can impact immune function and the effectiveness of immunotherapy.

It is really inspiring to see how a career that started with a Master’s in Nutritional Sciences in Vienna (within our first FWF funded project) has evolved into a top research career with high end international research projects - and finding back to the roots with this excellent collaboration.
