Abstrakt

Alcohol consumption is still among the leading causes of liver damage world-wide. Molecular mechanisms of the development of alcohol-related liver diseases (ALD) are still not fully understood, however, several studies suggest an important role of alcohol-mediated changes in intestinal barrier function and the interaction with the liver (gut-liver-axis) seems to be critical for the development of ALD. This book chapter focuses on the present knowledge and understanding of the altered intestinal barrier function subsequently leading to an increased permeation of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMP) followed by an activation of pattern recognition receptors like toll-like receptors (TLR) in the development of ALD.
