What has been your previous career path so far?

Katrin: In 2016, I obtained my Bachelor of Science degree in Biotechnology from Sapienza University of Rome, Italy. Following that, I enrolled as a PhD student in Immunology at the University of Leicester, UK, successfully completing my doctoral research project in early 2021. Subsequently, I joined a biotechnology company in Mechelen, Belgium, as a Scientist in the Pathway Biology team. So far, my primary research focus has been centred on autoimmune, inflammatory, and fibrotic diseases, with a special emphasis on the discovery of novel targets using of proteomic tools.

Why did you decide to join the SHIFT2HEALTH project?

I saw the SHIFT2HEALTH project as an excellent opportunity for me to engage in a multidisciplinary, multicentre study, and not just as an active member, but also from a coordination perspective. It is very stimulating to work with colleagues from different organizations and institutions across Europe and to see how everyone’s expertise is crucial for the achievement of all shared objectives.  I firmly believe that scientific progress thrives on collaboration, and SHIFT2HEALTH exemplifies this principle perfectly. Ultimately, I decided to join the project as I like to think that my daily job as scientist can meaningfully have an impact on people’s life.

Is there anything you already like about Vienna?

Fortunately, I'm very familiar with Vienna, even though this is my first time living in this charming city. One aspect I appreciate about Vienna is that it offers quite spots and green spaces, despite being a considerable city. Additionally, there is always something to do, an event to attend or activities to participate to!

What do you expect from the next years in the Wagner Group?

I anticipate great team spirit and mutual support within the Wagner Group. My initial week with the team has been incredibly positive, and I've felt warmly welcomed by my colleagues. I particularly like how everyone in the team is well organized and works hard, while keeping a very friendly atmosphere. I have full confidence that this positive dynamic will persist in the upcoming years.

What do you think will be your greatest challenges in the SHIFT2HEALTH project?

I think a significant challenge in the SHIFT2HEALTH project will be the recruitment of enough participants to meet the targets outlined in the project plan. Engaging with workers who have fluctuating day and night shifts and maintaining their sustained interest could be challenging. The project is definitely ambitious, however the potential data and insights that can be extracted from this study will have a substantial impact across Europe.

Welcome to the team Katrin!
